Ping Pong Table Dimensions: Full, Midi & Small Size

Quick Note: The one and only standard ping pong table dimensions are 2.74 x 1.525 x 0.76 in metric, 9 x 5 x 2.5 in feet, and 108 x 60 x 30 in inches.

This article is going to inform you of different ping pong table dimensions, how much space you need for a ping pong table, as well as other ping pong table components and requirements you should consider.

Also, we’ve collected the top 20 FAQs about the topic at the end of the article. If you’ve already got a specific question, just skip to that part for a quick answer.

Different Dimensions of Ping Pong Tables

You can choose different sizes of ping pong tables as needed.

For professional and competition levels, the ITTF-approved regulation ping pong table size was just made for you.

For children, small or midi ping pong table size would be more appropriate.

For limited playing space, both small ping pong table sizes and outdoor ping pong table dimensions are great choices.

For recreational purposes only, you can choose any size ping pong table you like. No matter whether it’s a super-mini table tennis table that can only be placed on a desk or a ping pong conversion top that can be placed on any surface.

Here’re the 6 types of ping pong table dimensions:

Full-Size Ping Pong Table Dimensions

Ping Pong Table Dimensions in InchesPing Pong Table Dimensions in FeetPing Pong Table Dimensions in Metric
Ping Pong Table Length107.87 in9.0 ft2.74 m
Ping Pong Table Width60 in5.0 ft1.525 m
Ping Pong Table Height29.92 in2.5 ft0.76 m

You may feel confused when you see there’re so many ping pong table dimensions, be it official size, normal size, standard size, Olympic size, competition size, professional size and etc.

Well, although people give different names to the ping pong table size, they all share the same dimensions, that is 274 cm long x 152.5 cm wide x 76 cm high.

Almost all the table tennis tables on the market are made to standard ping pong table size. Otherwise, they’ll label the product “small”, “mini”, “midi” or “junior”, so that you can directly tell its size by its name.

Note that table tennis dimensions and table thickness are two different concepts, many manufacturers and shopping websites confuse the two.

Midsize Ping Pong Table Dimensions

Ping Pong Table Dimensions in InchesPing Pong Table Dimensions in FeetPing Pong Table Dimensions in Centimeter
Ping Pong Table Length72 in6.0 ft183 cm
Ping Pong Table Width40 in3.3 ft102 cm
Ping Pong Table Height30 in2.5 ft76 cm

When we talk about midsize ping pong table, we refer to the 2/3 size ping pong table.

Generally speaking, 2/3 size ping pong tables are tables with two-thirds length & width, and the same height as a full-size ping pong table.

However, different from full-size ping pong tables, whose dimensions are regulated by ITTF, midsize ping pong table dimensions can vary quite a bit depending on different ping pong table manufacturers.

For example, according to Stiga, the midsize ping pong table dimensions are 181 cm long x 102.5 cm wide x 75 cm high, which are approximately 2/3 that of a full-size ping pong table.

Midsize ping pong table would be a great choice for recreational purposes. Besides, it has multiple uses, on which you can play beer pong and other recreational games.

Small Ping Pong Table Dimensions

If 3/4 or 2/3 size ping pong tables are still too big for you, have a look at small ping pong tables.

They are compact, easy to accommodate, and only measure 6 x 3 ft in length and width, with the universal 2.5 ft height.

As mentioned before, midsize and small ping pong tables are best for recreational use. If your ambition is to become a professional player, a small ping pong table might not be something that you should consider.

Some parents may prefer a small ping pong table for children’s training, but I’m not in agreement with this practice. Why? Because it does need a log of time for them to adapt the standard table size in the future.

Outdoor Ping Pong Table Size:

Some people may mistakenly think that outdoor ping pong tables are bigger than ordinary ping pong tables. But is that the truth?

Actually, the dimensions of an outdoor ping pong table are exactly the same as a standard indoor ping pong table. That means the outdoor ping pong table size is still 9 ft long x 5 ft wide x 2.5 ft high.

And since there are no space limitations for outdoor play, it’s rare to find a midsize or small outdoor ping pong table.

Recreational Ping Pong Table Size:

If you just plan to have a ping pong table for recreational play, I’d strongly recommend you to buy a midsize ping pong table, which is not too big, and not too small.

For me, smaller ping pong tables will not only cater to active and sociable breaks but also add to the fun of the sport.

Normally a midsize ping pong table is 2/3 the size of a regulation size ping pong table. Also, a 3/4 size ping pong table is a popular choice.

Besides, you can also prepare bigger or smaller balls and paddles for more fun.

Folding Ping Pong Table Dimensions:

For easy storage and transportation, most ping pong tables have been designed foldable, so they can be easily put behind the door or under the bed.

On average, a half-folding ping pong table’s dimensions are 4.5 ft long, 5ft wide and 5 ft high, a full-folding ping pong table measures 1.5 ft long x 4.5 ft wide x 5 ft high, and the shipping dimensions of a ping pong table are 60 inches by 60 inches by 20 inches.

You can refer to the above information to estimate first whether it is possible to put a ping pong table in your home, basement, or garage.

Space Required for A Ping Pong Table

Here’s the table tennis court size in metric, feet, and inches.

MetersFeetInches
Minimum2.5 x 58 x 1696 x 192
Recreational Play3.3 x 5.811 x 19132 x 228
Tournaments7 x 1423 x 46275.5 x 551
International Events8 x 1626 x 52315 x 630

Generally speaking, the size of the table tennis court is 7 x 14 meters, and the specifications are often bigger for world champions and Olympic Games, up to 8 meters x 16 meters.

Minimum Space Required to Play Table Tennis at Home

The minimum space required to play table tennis indoors depends on your ping pong playing level.

For premium and advanced table tennis players, they have good catching and serving skills, thus can freely move towards and away from the table, and need more space.

While, for beginners, believe me, you’ll never leave the table.

So, the recommended minimum room size I’d say for high-level players is 11 x 19 feet, and 8 x 16 feet for beginner level.

Recommended Room Size for Doubles Games

In official table tennis competitions, singles and doubles are played on the same size court.

So, if you plan to play doubles in offices or at home, the minimum playing space is still 11 x 19 ft.

But just in case you and your partners hit each other when swinging the rackets, from a safety perspective, the recommended room size for doubles games is 14 x 28 ft.

Space Required to Store a Ping Pong Table

To store a ping pong table, I’d recommend you fold up both sides of the table.

A fully folding ping pong table would only measure about 1.5 ft x 4.5 ft x 5 ft, so that’s how big space you need for ping pong table storage.

The safe way to store the table is to put it against the wall or under the bed, just in case the locking casters and anti-tilting devices not working well.

Other Ping Pong Table Components and Requirements

Net

InchesFeetCentimeter
Ping Pong Table Net Height6 in0.5 ft15.25 cm
Ping Pong Table Net Length72 in6 ft183 cm
Ping Pong Table Net Overhang6 in0.5 ft15.25 cm

It’s worth noting that the net is longer than the ping pong table center line and supported by two posts, which must be strictly the same height as the net.

The net color should be dark black, dark blue, or dark green, top with a white cord, which shouldn’t be wider than 15 mm.

Markings

SidelineEndlineCenterline
Millimeters20203

There shall be a 2 cm wide white line on each side of the table surface, with a 3mm wide white center line dividing it into two equal halves.

Note that the center line shall be regarded as belonging to the right half of the table.

Color

The only mandatory rule for table color is to be uniformly dark-colored with a matt finish so that players can easily tell the ball’s trajectory.

International competitions used to regulate the table color dark green, but recently dark blue tables are adopted more often. You may have noticed this change by watching table tennis matches.

Purple and black colors are also popular among ping pong lovers.

Thickness

The ping pong table thickness can range from 1/2 inch (12 mm) to 1 inch (25 mm), with 25 mm the regulation size for official events, like world champions and Olympic competitions.

Technically speaking, the thicker a table is, the better bounce it can produce.

If you drop a ping pong ball from 300mm away from a 25 mm table, the rebound height should reach 230-260mm.

Meanwhile, the thicker a table is, the more expensive it can be.

If you have a limited budget, we recommend you buy a 3/4 inches thick ping pong table.

Weight

Full-Size TablesMid-Size TablesTable Tops
180 to 230 pounds50 to 70 pounds80 pounds or so

On average, a full-size ping pong table can weigh 180 to 230 pounds, a midsize ping pong table 50 to 70 pounds, and a tabletop 80 pounds or so.

Table thickness is proportional to stability and inversely proportional to portability, so you should choose the thickness that works best for you based on your preferences.

Generally speaking, in the case of the same size, stationary ping pong tables are heavier than portable ping pong tables, and indoor ping pong tables are heavier than outdoor ping pong tables.

Frame

The frame is right under the edges of the playing surface and is made of reinforced material.

Someone would also call the frame the tabletop apron.

A high-quality ping pong table should have a sturdy frame that can well protect the tabletop edges and support the playing surface.

Legs

Table legs are the most important supportive part of the whole table. Tables with heavy tabletop need thick legs, and likewise, tables with light tabletop need thin legs.

Thick legs can add to the table stability but will sacrifice portability. Conversely, thin legs can improve portability but will lower the stability and durability of a table.

ITTF hasn’t made specific requirements for the legs, but most competition-level tables will set the legs back at least 40cm from the edge of the tabletop, so it would not affect the movement of the athletes.

Wheels

Wheels are an important indicator of portability.

The larger the wheels are, the more easily you can move the table on uneven and rough surfaces.

Nowadays, it’s rare to find a ping pong table without wheels, except for those stationary and very lightweight tables.

Built-in Racks

Built-in racks are the holders to store ping pong balls and rackets, mostly installed on recreational and outdoor ping pong tables.

This is a very thoughtful design, which can really benefit the playing experience.

However, it should not be a determinant when judging whether a tt table is in accordance with the regulations.

Instead, most high-end and professional table tennis tables will not adopt this device, because professionals all have their racket cases, and this device is totally useless to them.

Conversion Top

A conversion top only contains a playing surface and a net set, thus can be very cost-effective.

As it doesn’t have an undercarriage and chassis, you can adapt the height finally, which is not supported by normal ping pong tables.

You can put a conversion top on any surface that has a proper size and also is sufficiently sturdy. Usually, people will put the conversion top on a pool table or dining table.

When not in use, you can just put it down on the ground, or put it against the wall. It’s relatively easy to be stored.

Top 20 FAQs about Ping Pong Table and Ping Pong Table Dimensions

1. What is the standard size of a ping pong table?

Standard ping pong table size is regulated by ITTF (International Table Tennis Federation), and for your convenience, below I list the 3 common table tennis table measurements.

The standard ping pong table size in inches is 107.87 inches long x 60 inches wide x 29.92 inches high

The standard ping pong table size in feet is 9 ft long x 5 ft wide x 2.5 ft high.

The standard ping pong table size in centimeters is 274 cm long x 152.5 cm wide x 76 cm high.

2. What are the dimensions of a full-size table tennis table?

A full-size table tennis table is almost the same as a standard table tennis table, thus sharing the same length of 9 ft, width of 5 ft, and height of 2.5 ft.

A full-size ping pong table has the default ping pong table dimensions, and basically, once the table name doesn’t contain the word “small”, “mini”, “junior”, “midi”, “midsize”, it’s 99% a full-size ping pong table.

3. What is the regulation size of a ping pong table?

As any Olympic game has specific equipment or venue regulations, there’re also certain specifications for table tennis table size.

A regulation size ping pong table measures 274 cm long, 152.5 cm wide, and 76 cm high from the floor.

Regulation size is widely adopted in the manufacture of both professional and recreational ping pong tables.

The major difference between the two is the tabletop thickness.

For a professional ping pong table, the thickness should be 22-25 mm, while for a recreational ping pong table, there are no specifications.

4. What size is a 3/4 size table tennis table?

3/4 size table tennis table is literally 3/4 the size of a full-size table tennis table.

3/4 table tennis table is basically 7 x 4 x 2.5 in feet and 81″ x 45″ x 30″ in inches.

As 3/4 size table tennis won’t be used for formal table tennis competitions, ITTF didn’t specify the dimensions in inches, feet, or centimeters.

3/4 size table tennis is more suitable for recreational use and can be put at home or in the office to encourage an active and sociable lifestyle.

Also, compared with full-size ping pong tables, 3/4 size ping pong tables are cheaper overall.

5. What size is an official ping pong table?

The size of an official ping pong table is 9 ft x 5 ft x 2.5 in feet, 107.87 x 60 x 29.92 in inches, and 274 x 152.5 x 76 in centimeters.

However, apart from ping pong table length, width and height, if you’re going to take professional ping pong table training, the table thickness is something that you have to consider.

The table thickness of a professional ping pong table should reach 22-25 mm so that you can expect a consistent and fast bounce from the table.

6. Are table tennis and ping pong tables the same size?

The answer is an absolute yes.

Although people from different countries give different names to the sport, it doesn’t mean the sport is any different in nature.

For example, the world’s greatest table tennis player, Ma Long, would call himself a ping pong table player. Why? Because in China, people used to call the sports ping pong.

So don’t be confused by the question anymore. Table tennis and ping pong tables are exactly the same thing.

7. Are there different sizes of ping pong tables?

Sure. According to different sizes, ping pong tables can be roughly divided into three categories:

  1. full-size ping pong table
  2. midsize ping pong table
  3. mini ping pong table

Except that a full-size ping pong table has some specific dimensions requirements, midsize and mini ping pong table dimensions can vary quite a bit depending on different ping pong table brands.

Full-size ping pong tables have the same dimensions as official, standard, and professional ping pong tables.

Midsize ping pong tables are 2/3 the size of full-size ping pong tables.

Mini ping pong tables can be smaller and have vaguer specifications.

8. Are there smaller ping pong tables?

The answer is yes!

You should always remember that where there is a need, there is the market.

For people who don’t have enough space and budget for a ping pong table, smaller ping pong tables are always great solutions.

As mentioned before, smaller ping pong tables are not only accommodative but also relatively cheap. The price for a midi or mini ping pong table is generally under 300 dollars.

Additionally, if you plan to have a ping pong table in your home or office, midi or mini ping pong tables can definitely add to the fun of the game.

9. How big is a midsize ping pong table?

Generally speaking, we define 2/3 dimensions of a full-size ping pong table as a midsize ping pong table.

Since midsize ping pong tables won’t be used in any level of table tennis competitions, no official institutions have not given specific measurements until now.

Still, you can refer to Stiga (one of the biggest ping pong table manufacturers) for some information.

According to Stiga, midsize ping pong should be 181 cm long x 102.5 cm wide x 75 cm high, which is approximately 2/3 of a regulation ping pong table size.

10. What is the size of a mini ping pong table?

As no regulatory body has ever defined the standard size of a mini ping pong table, there’re no specific dimensions that can be complied with by all ping pong table manufacturers.

It also means that the mini ping pong tables manufactured by different ping pong table companies can vary a little bit in size.

So, just for your reference, an average mini ping pong table is about 6 x 3 x 2.5 ft.

11. What size is the average ping pong table size?

For a full-size ping pong table, the average size is 9 x 5 x 2.5 feet.

For a midsize ping pong table, the average size is 2/3 that of a full-size ping pong table, which is 3 x 3.3 x 2.5 feet.

You may have noticed that the ping pong table height is kind of fixed so you should choose a full-size or midsize ping pong table according to the length and width of the place where you want to put the ping pong table.

12. How many square feet does a ping pong table occupy?

To calculate how many square feet a ping pong table occupies, we need to multiply ping pong table length times ping pong table width.

For a regulation size ping pong table, it’ll occupy 9 x 5 = 45 square feet of space.

For a midsize ping pong table, it’ll occupy 6 x 3.3 ≈ 20 square feet space.

13. How big is a folded ping pong table?

As we all know, most indoor and outdoor ping pong tables can be folded one-sided or bilateral.

You can fold up one side for playback and fold up both two sides for storage.

So if your indoor space is relatively limited, it’s important to know how big the folded ping pong table would be before you buy one.

A regulation size ping pong table folded in half would be 4.5 ft long, 5 ft wide, and the folded-up side will increase the ping pong table height to about 5 ft.

Besides, you need to make sure the ceilings are 4-5 ft higher than the folded-up table side, otherwise, the ceilings and hanging light may get in the way of flying balls.

When both sides are folded up, the table width and height stay the same, but the table length would become the distance between the two sides’ caster wheels, which is about 1.5 ft.

Thus a completely folded up ping pong table is approximately 1.5 ft x 4.5 ft x 5 ft.

14. What size is a table tennis tabletop?

The size of a table tennis tabletop is 9 ft long by 5 ft wide, the same length and width as a regulation size ping pong table.

Since it has no legs, you can put it on any surface. And most people would choose to put it on a pool table or dining table because they have the perfect height as a normal ping pong table.

Ping pong table conversion top could be a good choice if you’ve already had other game tables and you don’t play ping pong very often.

15. How much does a ping pong table weigh?

Full-Size TablesMid-Size TablesTable Tops
180 to 230 pounds50 to 70 pounds80 pounds or so

How much a ping pong table weigh is important when it comes to ping pong table assembly.

Ping pong table weight can vary quite a bit depending on the table thickness and table materials.

Generally speaking, stationary ping pong tables are heavier than portable ping pong tables, and indoor ping pong tables are heavier than outdoor ping pong tables.

The data shown in the above table are the average weight for different sizes of ping pong tables. You can check the official websites of table tennis table manufacturers for more specific information.

16. What is the length of a table tennis net?

The typical table tennis net length is 6 ft.

Yes, you read that correctly.

The table tennis net is wider than the table and the extra part equably hangs over each side.

This design is similar to a tennis net, and I guess the goal is to reduce the traversal from both sides.

17. What size room do you need for a ping pong table? How much space is required to store the table?

According to my experience, the ideal room size to play ping pong would be 24 ft long by 12 ft wide. Thus both players will have enough space to freely move forward and backward.

However, for beginners, you probably cannot leave the table 1 foot away, and thus need a smaller playing space.

But still, the minimum room size I’d say is 15 feet long by 8 feet wide.

To store a ping pong table, I’d recommend you fold up the two sides.

A folding ping pong table would only take about 1.5 ft long x 4.5 ft wide x 5 ft high space, so that’s the space you need to store the ping pong table.

18. How thick should a ping pong table be?

Before I answer this question, you need to ask yourself a question first.

Do you want to buy an indoor or outdoor ping pong table?

For indoor ping pong tables, the tabletops are made of wood, and the thicker the tabletop is, the better the bounce would perform.

Typically, an indoor ping pong table thickness should reach 12 mm, while for professional and competition levels, the thickness should reach 22-25 mm. And nearly all the tt tables used in formal competitions are 25 mm thick.

For outdoor ping pong tables, to better withstand wind, water, and sun damage, the tabletops are made of metal, which is destined to be thinner.

Typically, an outdoor ping pong table thickness should range from 4-10 mm.

19. Are Olympic table tennis tables smaller?

The Answer is No.

Olympic table tennis tables must be strictly regulation size, although not all regulation-size tables can be used for Olympic competitions.

Any table tennis table used in ITTF-sanctioned competitions, like Olympic Games, must be tested and approved by ITTF first. So, there is no possibility that Olympic table tennis tables are smaller.

20. What is the beer pong table size in cm?

Compare to playing ping pong in the offices or at household parties, many people will choose beer pong as a recreational game.

A regulation beer pong table size in centimeters is 244 cm long, 61 cm wide, and 70 cm high.

Final Thoughts

By now, you’ve probably got an idea about what different ping pong table dimensions are, how much space you need for a ping pong table, as well as other ping pong table components and specifications.

The most important point is that whether you are looking for a regulation size, standard size, official size, Olympic size, or competition-size ping pong table, the dimensions are all 9 x 5 x 2.5 ft.

If you have any other questions related to ping pong table dimensions, feel free to leave me a comment. I’ll be thrilled to help you! Have a good day!
